Resident Evil 3 Remake Walkthrough: A Guide to Surviving Raccoon City

Resident Evil 3 is a remake of the 1999 classic Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, now completely remade for PS4 which earned a ‘Good’ in our full Resident Evil 3 review.

Our Resident Evil 3 walkthrough explains how to complete Jill’s campaign from start to finish, as well as the sections controlling Carlos.

This walkthrough is designed for a playthrough on the standard difficulty level, not including any of the bonus items bought from the shop unlocked after completing the game for the first time. So, without further ado, let’s get this Resident Evil 3 remake walkthrough started.

Bright Lights, Big City

Jill will be spending some time on the streets of the city she once called home, and fortunately for you, a map of Raccoon City is readily available to navigate your way around. Make good use of it, as your map can tell you if you’ve missed items in an area, and even keep track of locked doors.

Sharp-eyed fans of the original Resident Evil 3: Nemesis might recognize familiar stores like Eagle’s Pet Shop, while new locations, such as Moon’s Donuts, are a great place to stop and take a moment to rest. Keep your eyes and ears open, too. Rattling doors or distant groans mean that there are likely enemies approaching — though zombies may soon be the least of your worries as you venture through the streets and buildings of Raccoon City.

Mix It Up

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: One green herb mixed with one red herb is a recipe for full health. Resident Evil 3 continues this long tradition, making for an easy way to restore your health in a pinch. Red herbs are less common, but they don’t have any useful properties on their own. Make sure you have some spare green herbs to mix with them to create powerful healing items!

Speaking of mixing, ammo mixing from the original Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (and re-introduced in last year’s Resident Evil 2) makes a return. There are different kinds of gunpowder, and different mixes yield different types of ammunition. Craft the type of ammo that fits your playstyle, and what you’ll need for the trials ahead – but make sure to plan ahead! A single bottle of gunpowder doesn’t do anything on its own.

Jill’s Lightning Hawk

Extended magazine: Shortly after finding the three fuses to activate the elevator in the underground storage, you will enter the zone control center. Before examining the row of computers, check behind it, near the large window, for a case containing the only upgrade from the Lighting Hawk. The extended barrel will decrease the recoil of the pistol while also increasing its attack power.

Did You Hear That?

Tim mentioned this already in his article the other day, but voice communication can make a huge difference for the Survivors. No matter if you squad up with a trusty group of allies, or make some new friends as you play, being respectful and supportive of your allies while talking through matches will help you make it to the end.

There’s a flip side to voice chat, though; crafty Masterminds can choose to use their own mic to taunt the Survivors and listen in on their conversations, adding a psychological layer to the proceedings. A keen Mastermind can listen in, and play mind games by selectively responding to their test subjects. Sometimes silence is the most terrifying sound of all.

Jill’s G19 handgun

Pistol point sight: This upgrade can be located in the art storage room across from the Kite Bros metro office in downtown. Inside the storage room is a locked safe, and next to it is a note from the deceased owner. This note will give you a hint on how to unlock the safe, which will take you to the nearby Drugstore, which is next to the Kite Bros office. At the back of the store is an Aqua Cure poster, which has three circled numbers – this is the combination key for the safe. Return to the art storage room and unlock the safe to get the Punch Point Viewfinder, which will increase the accuracy of the G19. | For convenience, if you want to access the safe, the combination is left 9, right 1, left 8.

Extended magazine and moderator of handguns: These two upgrades are removed from Nemesis. Once it has suffered enough damage, it will drop an Umbrella storage case, which houses ammo and upgrades. The tricky part about this is that the drops are related to the current point in history, so if you wait too long to delete it, you will miss some improvements. Additionally, the drops are only available during the Downtown section of the game, so they can be easy to miss.

There are two opportunities to do so: the first is during the chase immediately after the power plant (which will give you the extended magazine), and the second is when Nemesis chases Jill after infecting zombies with the parasite, just at the outside the Donut Boutique (which will leave the moderator). The best way to get rid of Nemesis is the various explosive barrels scattered around. Once it’s close enough, shoot the barrel to lower it easily. Remember, these are the only two opportunities to get the upgrades, so if you miss one or both and progress through the story, you won’t be able to get them at all.

Carlos CQBR assault rifle

AR range: Shortly after arriving at R.P.D. Station, you will meet a zombified Brad Vickers. Although you can ignore it, removing it will earn you the S.T.A.R.S. ID, which will open locked safes throughout the station. Carlos’s first weapons upgrade case is in the West office. To get there, you will have to cross the reception in the direction of the north corridor. When you arrive in the area full of zombies, you will find doors leading to the R.P.D. Armory and west office. Inside the office is a S.T.A.R.S. chest. Use the ID card you got from Brad to open it and get the AR Scope, increasing the accuracy of the rifle.

Tactical grip: This upgrade is located in the Courtyard of Spencer Memorial Hospital. Arriving on the second floor, you will find broken windows that allow you to jump into the courtyard, which has a few extra items to pick up. The broken window near the door to the nurse’s station leads to an area with green grass and a chest with the tactical handle. This will decrease the recoil of the weapon.

Double magazines: Carlos’s latest upgrade is in the nurse’s safe. To access the safe, you will need to obtain the combined key to a note in the surgery room on the first floor. To access it, you will need the hospital ID from the second floor staff room. Read the note found in the operating room to get the combination for the safe, which will unlock access to double magazines. This upgrade doubles the amount of rifle ammunition in a single clip from 32 to 64. | For convenience, if you want to access the safe, the combination is left 9, right 3.
