Resident Evil 3 Remake Walkthrough: A Guide to Surviving Raccoon City

Resident Evil 3 Remake walkthrough — Raccoon City and the Kite Bros Railway puzzle

If you need a helping hand as you guide Jill Valentine through Raccoon City, find the Fire Hose, solve the Kite Brose Railway puzzle, and maybe get a Hip Pouch and Extended Mag, here’s a handy guide.

You start the game in your apartment in first-person. To trigger the next scene you need to head to the bathroom and interact with the sink.

When you awake from the nightmare, you can interact with the evidence wall to read some lore. When you’ve finished digging through the apartment, head back for the sink.

The game then switches to third-person and you need to head to the phone, triggering a cutscene. Run down the corridor to the next cutscene then head out the open window onto the fire escape.

Head down the fire escape and through the window into the floor below. Head towards the fire to trigger the next cutscene, then run toward the door with the exit sign once it’s played out.

You’ll be blown outside onto another fire escape here. Head down. Another cutscene will play and you’ll be chased through a fiery corridor. Just run away from the screen by pushing forward on the stick.

Head towards the liquor store and Brad Vickers will appear. Follow after him. Eventually another cutscene will play and loads of zombies will spill over a gate. Run away and get through the door of Bar Jack.

Another cutscene will play and you’ll be out in an alleyway with a corpse ahead of you. Interact with the corpse to access your first weapon: the pistol.

Once you pick it up, you’ll be facing down a zombie. You can use the gun to kill it, but it’s a waste of ammo since more zombies will appear from around the corner. Just turn around and run away.

A sign will fall in your path, but you can crawl under it. On the other side, take a left and go through the gate. Head through the door ahead and past the man who locks himself in the truck.

Grab some handgun ammo from the barrel and head through the yellow door. Ignore the dog and head opposite, crawling through the gap beneath the fallen fence.

Run through the parking garage and call the elevator. Zombies will appear and you need to kite them away and slip past them to get into the elevator. Don’t forget to use dodge (R1) to slip past more easily — time it just as a zombie lunges to execute a perfect dodge.

Another cutscene will play and you need to follow the prompts to run Nemesis off the ledge in your car. Follow Carlos to trigger the next cutscene.

Once you’re done there, head out of the subway and into the safe room above. There’s some green herbs here and you can also get two lots of gunpowder which you can combine together to create more handgun ammo.

There’s also a breakable box you can slash with your knife — this contains a red herb. Pick that up and combine it with one of your green herbs to make a more potent health curative.

You can also save the game at the typewriter and store any unneeded items. It’s best to just carry one curative with you at this point, so stash the green herb you have spare.

Head under the shutter and out onto the street. Get past the zombie and take a left down the alley. Grab the handgun ammo and deal with the two zombies ahead. Then go through the gate ahead.

Run to the end of the street, past the zombies shaking the fence, to trigger another cutscene.

Resident Evil 3 Remake Fire Hose location

Turns out you need a Fire Hose, so head back and the fence holding the zombies at bay will fall, allowing you to pass. Get past them and head down the stairs into the donut shop.

There’s a safe room in here with a fancy box. Examine it to get the Red Jewel and put that in the storage box. Here’s a guide to track down the rest of the jewels in Resident Evil 3 Remake.

Save the game if you like and head out the back door onto the streets. Head into Kite Bros Railway. Deal with the zombie, take a right and pick up the Fire Hose.

You can grab a hand grenade and some gunpowder from the room next door. Take note of this room because you’ll want to grab that Shotgun from the weapon rack later on.

On your way out, head into the control room and look under the desks for a bobblehead to shoot. Now head back onto the streets, take a left and head up the metal stairs.

Go through the door and through the next door, but be careful of zombies on the other side of the second one. There’s a safe in here and you can check out our guide on the safes and lockers to get it open.

There’s also some gunpowder nearby. Head out the door and onto the metal walkway. Follow it round.

You’ll be on a rooftop and you can get a red herb from a box nearby. Follow the rooftop round and you can get some gunpowder from near a zombie feasting on a corpse. Then head onto the scaffold, kick the ladder down, and climb down.

Use the Fire Hose on the hydrant near the fire opposite.

Resident Evil 3 Remake Bolt Cutters

Head into the repair shop, save if you like, reorganize your inventory, grab the Bolt Cutters and use them to head through the door with the chain. If you want, you can first head back to the shotgun and grab it. It’s easier to do now, before Nemesis turns up again.

Once you’ve done that, head through the door to trigger a cutscene. Head up the stairs and through the door. Down the stairs, take a right and grab some handgun ammo and a note, then head back in the other direction.

When you turn the next corner two dogs will run at you. Take aim at the electrical box with your pistol, wait for them to get near, then take the shot. Kill them while they’re stunned.

Now head past the zombies at the fence and through the red door with the electric symbol on it. Kill the zombies in the locker room and grab the items you need out of the lockers, then head upstairs.

There’s a safe room up here. Make sure you grab the Hip Pouch to increase your inventory space by two slots.

Rearrange your items and save.

Resident Evil 3 Remake breakers

Head down the stairs and grab the green herbs. Don’t mix them. There’s an enemy coming up that can infect you with a parasite, and a single green herb will cure you. If you mix them, you’re wasting your chances.

There’s a body down here with a lockbox that has a Lockpick in it. You need that to get through the next door.

In the next room you need to switch on four breakers. Here’s how to do it as fast as possible.

Use the shotgun to keep the creepy crawlers at bay and use a green herb whenever a parasite infects you.

Run down the corridor and take the first available left.

Run to the end and take a right. Turn immediately right again and turn the breaker ahead on.

Head back the way you came and you’ll see another breaker straight ahead. Go turn it on.

Turn around and take a right, heading back where you came from, but take a left at the end, instead of heading to the exit.

Head right to the end of the corridor and take a left. Take another left and reset the breaker there.

Head through the nearby gate and up the ladder. Grab the handgun ammo out the box and head down the next ladder to the final breaker. Now head to the exit.

Head back up the stairs to trigger a cutscene.

Resident Evil 3 Remake Extended Magazine (Pistol)

Head back into the locker room and use the lock pick on the locker you couldn’t get into before to grab yourself some handgun ammo. Now head outside.

On your way across the street, Nemesis will turn up. Either kite him and slip past or dodge by him.

Head through the alleyway where you killed the dogs earlier and spin around, shoot the breaker. You can either do this to slow him down and get away. Or, if you’re feeling confident, lob a grenade at Nemesis and use your shotgun to temporarily down him. He will drop a Supply Case which you can open to unlock an Extended Magazine for your handgun.

Around the corner, use the shotgun to stagger the zombies and run past, up the stairs.

You’ll get a call from Carlos. Thirsty, thirsty Carlos.

Head through the red door into the safe room and use the lockpicks on the locker to get a first aid spray. Save and rearrange your items and then head out the door.

Now you need to head to the same building where you grabbed the shotgun — the Subway Control Room. The quickest route is through the donut shop.

Resident Evil 3 Remake Kite Bros Railway train lines puzzle

Once you’re in the Control Room, you need to do the Kite Bros Railway train lines puzzle. The idea is to map out the lines so that the train gets to your destination without passing through closed lines. The solution is, from top to bottom: FA-02, RA-03, SA-02.

When you head out the room, there’s a new zombie type to deal with. As with most enemies in this game, the best tactic is to shoot it and slip past while it’s staggered.

Now head outside and back through the donut shop towards the underground, dodging zombies and the Nemesis as you go.

If you want to get another Hip Pouch before you leave this area, you need to get the Blue and Green Jewels. Check our guide on the Coloured Jewels to track them down and use them on the Kite Bros Memorial in the safe room near the underground station.

In the next section there’s a cutscene, then you’ll be running from Nemesis. Lead him up the stairs and shoot the electric box to stun him. Now run through the room ahead while he’s stunned and interact with the vent three times to get through.

Resident Evil 3: Downtown — second visit walkthrough Resident Evil 3 guide, walkthrough

This page of the guide to Resident Evil 3 Remake has a walkthrough for the second visit to Raccoon City’s downtown. Jill returns to the Central Raccoon City area after restoring power. Nemesis will chase you here — read our guide to learn how to avoid his attacks. Jill needs to make the trains work again.

Bring the trains online in the subway office

Don’t forget to save the game and prepare yourself before you decide to leave the Subway Power Substation . Shortly after returning to the downtown area, Nemesis will break through one of the walls. He will try to prevent the protagonist from reaching the Kite Bros Railway building.

Here are some general tips on how to avoid Nemesis:

  1. You can’t defeat Nemesis; you can only slow him down. Unfortunately, Nemesis can easily catch up with Jill. When this happens, use the shotgun or grenades to weaken and stop Nemesis for a moment. He won’t pursue Jill for some time.
  2. Avoid Nemesis’ melee attacks by keeping a safe distance and dodging.
  3. Nemesis can grab Jill with his tentacles. If you get pulled, get up and move away from the monster as quickly as possible. Otherwise, the mutant will attack you.
  4. Weakened Nemesis can «drop» a case. Be sure to pick them up — they contain valuable loot. The first case should contain a weapon upgrade
  5. Zombies may appear while you are running away from Nemesis. They can appear even in those locations you have «cleared» earlier. If you don’t want to risk Nemesis catching up with Jill, attack and knock down only those zombies in your way.

The complete information about Nemesis can be found on Nemesis — the main antagonist page.

The picture above shows possible escape routes marked with red lines.

  1. You start at point 1, which is the gate connecting Subway Power Substation with downtown .
  2. You have to reach point 2, the Subway Office — the Kite Bros Railway building.

There is more than one path leading to the destination. You have to choose the route after you leave the garage:

  1. You can stay on the main street and run through the Donut Shop .
  2. You can use the ladder on the main street, but it is only possible if you have dropped it earlier. This will make it easier to run across the roof and through the building with a safe.

Along the way, you will pass two places with typewriters — use them. These places are the garage and the Donut Shop .

The destination is the control room in the west part of the Subway Office . You have to solve a puzzle to bring trains online. Go to the central control panel and interact with it. Your job is to manipulate the knobs on the left side of the screen. You must correctly select the abbreviated station names and numbers.

Final solution of the puzzle is shown in the screenshot above. The correct values are:

  1. RE — 01 (abbreviation of Redstone Street)
  2. FA — 02 (abbreviation of Faust Avenue)
  3. RA — 03 (abbreviation of Raccoon Central)
  4. SA — 02 (abbreviation of Saint Michael’s Clock Tower)
  5. FO — 01 (abbreviation of Fox Park Station)

When all stations are correctly set, press the ENTER button.

The solution is shown in the picture above. If you have chosen the correct stations and their numbers, you will get a new call. Head to the metro station where Mikhail and Carlos are staying.

Return to the Subway Station

Be careful when you leave the room -you will have your first encounter with a zombie with a parasite on its head. This is a regular zombie who has been infected by Nemesis — this enemy is more dangerous.

Zombies with a parasite can attack at a distance with tentacles — try to shoot them from as far away as possible and aim at the parasite when it «opens up». After the zombie falls to the ground, you can quickly run past it or run to it and kill the parasite (you can also do this with the knife).

Stop at the Donut Shop and save your progress. Nemesis should reappear soon after leaving the store — he will infect another zombie.

We recommend using the same tactics as before — use the shotgun or grenades to temporarily stop Nemesis from chasing you. There is a chance that Nemesis may leave behind another large suitcase after getting down on one knee — it should contain a second upgrade for Jill’s gun.

Follow the familiar route to the Redstone Street Station . Expect new zombies to appear along the way — we recommend attacking only those standing in your way. Squeeze under the partially raised gate, go down the stairs and watch a cut-scene.

Lure the creature away from the subway station

You are back at the Redstone Street Station — Nemesis will chase you again. Along the way, you can find a healing spray. Pick it up and don’t stop anywhere else.

The linear corridors will lead you to the warehouse. You can easily stop Nemesis here by shooting at the red barrel when the monster is standing next to it.

To escape the warehouse, find the yellow grid shown in the picture above. You have to kick it a few times to unlock the entrance to the vent shaft. It leads to the sewers — Nemesis will stop chasing you for now.

Guide by Joel Franey, Guides Writer

Updated on 3 April 2020

A terrifying escapade through the streets of Raccoon City, the Resident Evil 3 Remake is full of challenge, secrets and puzzles that will tax your skills to the utmost. We’ve assembled all the information you’ll need you’ll need in our Resident Evil 3 Guides Hub.

On this page:

Resident Evil 3 Guides

There’s a lot to cover in Resident Evil 3, but we’ve broken down everything you’ll be doing below, arranged in chronological order to minimize the chance of spoilers. Simply scroll down to your place in the game or use the chapters above, and you’ll have everything you need to survive.

The first section is a pitched battle and escape with Nemesis in his most humanoid form. | Joel Franey/USgamer, Capcom Co., LTD

Jill’s Apartment, First Streets of Raccoon City and the Parking Garage

Before the game starts, it’s important to know what you’re getting into, so we’ve outlined all the difficulty choices here and how much power you have to change them as you go. After that, the game begins with a chase through Jill’s apartment building and out onto the streets as they encounter Nemesis for the first time. This is the most linear section of the game, and we’ve outlined the majority of the escape in our guide here. After that, it’s a straight-line path through the decimated streets of Raccoon City to make it to a parking garage, wherein you’ll confront Nemesis again in a quicktime event before getting rescued by Carlos.

Downtown, the Substation Power System and the Subway

Here we’ll see the game properly open up, as well as introducing you to the basics of crafting. The Downtown area is the largest and longest in the game, a sprawling zone filled with zombies and more, but the order of events goes thusly:

  1. You’ll need to repower the Subway and redirect a train full of survivors with Carlos, Mikhael and Nicholai on board. To do that, you’ll have to reach the substation and activate it, then head to the Subway Offices to set the train’s path.
  2. First of all, you need to put out the alley fire to gain access to the Substation, which we’ve explained here.
  3. After doing that, you’ll be able to access the Shotgun, an optional and powerful weapon, but only after obtaining the Bolt Cutters.
  4. You can also use this opportunity to open the first of the game’s safes and get a weapon attachment for your handgun.
  5. Once you’re done, move onto the Power Substation. This area will allow you to get the lock picks, but also put you through the horrific parasite maze.
  6. You can also find the first item to increase your inventory size here.
  7. Once you’re back out and activated the power again, Nemesis will return as a roaming, unstoppable enemy. Still, we’ve got details on how to make him a little more stoppable.
  8. The next objective is to push through and make your way to the Subway Train Office to redirect the Subway. This is a puzzle we’ve explained the details for too.
  9. Before you go, make sure to unlock the train monument using the Fancy Boxes spread across the map! This’ll net you more inventory space and a weapon attachment.
  10. Upon returning to the Subway, there’ll be a linear chase with Nemesis to lure him away from the station, as well as a puzzle to escape him.
  11. Now that’s done, you’ll find yourself in the Sewers. Ick.

Jill must fight her way through the Downtown carnage, with a particularly gruesome encounter at the parasite maze. | Joel Franey/USgamer, Capcom Co., LTD

The Sewers

Jill vs. Flamethrower Nemesis at the Construction Site

Once out, you’ll have a further chase and eventually the first proper boss fight with Nemesis, who returns wielding a massive flamethrower. We’ve outlined what you need to do to take him down right here.

Return to Downtown and Kendo’s Gun Shop

After that, there’ll be a brief interval at Kendo’s Gun Shop from the previous game, as well as a more linear escape back to the Subway as Nemesis wields a rocket launcher this time. This is also your opportunity to find a shotgun attachment as you prepare to leave the Downtown area for good.

The Raccoon City Police Station

Now playing as Carlos, who has his own equipment and abilities, you’ll return to a scaled-down version of the Police Station from the previous game. The main objective here is to blow up a brick wall in the showers, which we’ve outlined accordingly, but you can also open another locked safe and get weapon attachments and inventory upgrades. You’ll also have to hunt down a special ID Card, which we can tell you where to find.

Now playing as Carlos, you’ll return to the police station from the previous game. | Joel Franey/USgamer, Capcom Co., LTD

Jill vs. Animal Nemesis in Outskirts/Clock Tower

Control will then go back to Jill, albeit briefly, to have a boss fight with Nemesis on the outskirts of town beneath a huge clock tower. Now in a more animalistic form, Nemesis is a whole different kind of enemy that we can show you how to beat here.

In the Hospital as Carlos

Jill’s infected injuries mean that we’re controlling Carlos again as we head to the hospital to find a vaccine and formulate a plan by capturing Doctor Bard. The main objective of this area is to beat a voice print lock into Bard’s laboratory, which we’ve outlined here. There’s also the final safe, which you’ll need codes for, and the opportunity to get more weapon attachments and inventory upgrades. Your time as Carlos will culminate in a pitched battle holding off a zombie horde to protect Jill and your partner Tyrell, which you’ll definitely need the best strategy for if you’re going to survive.

The game culiminates in a pitched battle between Nemesis in his final form, and Jill with Umbrella’s most powerful weapon. | Joel Franey/USgamer, Capcom Co., LTD

In the Hospital as Jill and the Underground Storage Bunker

We’re back to Jill for the last time, as now you’ll have the run of the hospital as her. Use the lock picks to open the door ahead of the lobby to move on, but before that go and grab the .44 Lightning Hawk Magnum for the most powerful weapon in the game. Once finished, you’ll take an elevator down to pursue Nicholai and undergo a strange labyrinth in which you’ll have to collect fuses for an elevator while fighting off all sorts of enemies. The last thing to do before you move on is grab the weapon attachments and hip pouches in the area, and then it’s on to the final area: Umbrella’s laboratory.

The NEST-2 Underground Umbrella Labs and the Final Boss Fights/Ending

Be sure to check back to catch any new guides we add along the way! In the meantime, there’s no shortage of Resident Evil content here at USG. You can find Caty’s review of Resident Evil 3 right here, or check out Mat’s story on the scariest enemy possible getting modded into the game.
