My Favorite Mods For Star Wars: Empire At War

For those unfamiliar with Empire at War (EaW), here’s the background context – nearly 14 years ago on Feburary 16th, 2006, Petroglyph Games brought Star Wars to the RTS scene with sprawling land-based fights, and glorious space battles. Later in the same year, they returned on October 24th, 2006, with it’s highly anticipated expansion Star Wars: Empire at War: Forces of Corruption. These titles accrued strong long-term fanbases that have been playing and modding the game since.

I had played dozens, if not hundreds of hours of EaW post-launch, and as most of us tend to – eventually moved onto other titles. But I’m back in 2020, over 10 years later and I’ll be damned if, EaW’s gameplay doesn’t still hold up. With the lively and still active modding community, why should we be restricted to what it was, and not what it could be? There are so many incredible options at our fingertips, why not experience the best Empire at War that a PC can offer?

That being said, let’s detail a few of my favorite total conversion mods available for Star Wars: Empire at War, and Forces of Corruption.

Disclaimer: Have a massive preference for space battles

    Return of the Clones (FoC)

    A mod that adds a fourth faction to the base game — the resurgent Galactic Republic, along with associated changes to the other three factions.

    KotOR Mod (0.9)

    Evil33 brings us a well compiled Knights of the Old Republic era mod aptly named KotOR Mod. It draws from a variety of free-release sources to bring us a nicely blended mod. It currently replaces the three standard Forces of Corruption factions with the Old Republic, the Sith Empire and the Mandalorian clans. For all of the mod players out there seeking to appease their love of the Old Republic era, be sure to give this mod a download. [quote] [line] [i]The story: When Revan arrived at the Starforge, Canderous disappeared. Carth followed Revan to rescue Bastila. They fought their way to the command center of the station where they found her. After that Revan headed to Malak’s room and while they were duelling a third fleet dropped out of the hyperspace. Canderous had, behind Revan’s back, reformed the Mandalorian Clans and lead them into the battle of the Starforge. In this moment Revan opened his mind to the dark side to fear all his enemies out there in space. Bastila and Carth felt the quake in the force and decided to flee form the station as long as they were able to. they reached the Republic forces and together with Admiral Dodonna and Master Vandar they decided that their fleet can’t fight against two enemies at the same time. So they jumped with the rest of the Republic fleet to hyperspace. When Canderous realized that the Republic retreat and that his troops would not have any chance against the Starforge and its infinite army, he told his fleet to prepare the hyperjump but then the hole power of the dark side irrupted the Mandalorians. The Neo-Crusaders were rolling on the floor crying and only these with enormous willpower were able to resist the madness attacking their minds. When most of his mates were dead Canderous realized that Revan had nearly killed his whole army. Revan’s rage cooled down and around the Starforge dozens of ships floating around with no one being alive on board. Canderous and a few close mates managed to escape and swore to erase the Sith Empire for that Revan has done. But for getting strong enough to destroy the Sith they first had to get the necessary ressources and there was only one faction which had enough to be a rewarding target: The Republic [/i][line] [/quote]

    KotOR mod patch (0.95)

    This update packs quite a punch for less than 6 MB. Although still not perfect, it’s getting better with every release/update (as it should). The balancing issues in particular have been addressed nicely. You need the full version 0.9 before you can use this update.     New Galaxy Mod (1.0)

    If you’re especially into Star Wars lore, then this mod will make you sleep better at night by correctly placing the planets in GCs in their proper positions rather than Petroglyph’s seemingly arbitrary locations. With a handful of other tweaks included, this mod should make GCs more enjoyable for many people.     New Galaxy Mod (3.0)

    If you’ve enjoyed the previous releases of this, then here’s a nice new version that makes a few big changes including bringing back the Original EaW campaign into GC mode.     За пиратов можно играть: в завоевании галактики (все галактики были перепрописаны, и теперь пираты есть во всех галактиках), в быстрой наземной и космической схватке (есть поддержка бота.)

    *** Инструкция ***

    Чтобы играть за пиратов во всех режимах игры:

    1) В меню выбора карты нажимаем на поле выбора фракции, после чего выезжает поле с фракциями “Империя” и “Повстанцы”.
    2) Затем нажимаем на поле левой кнопкой мыши, и не отпуская её крутим колесо вниз.
    3) На поле появляется надпись “Пираты Черного Солнца”, после чего наводим стрелку на эту надпись и отпускаем.

    Доступны все юниты пиратов, в их число входят:

    Истребитель Z95
    Пиратский Истребитель
    V-Крыл (истребитель времен клонов)
    Сторожевик IPV-1

    *** Общая информация ***

    Мод должен подходить под все версии игры, но если будут какие-нибудь ошибки, придется пропатчить игру.
    Рекомендую Steam версию игры.

    *** UPD 07.2019: Вообще, мод довольно древний, балансом я толком не занимался, а сам мод делал чисто из интереса, так что вы свободны редактировать мод как хотите и выкладывать свои версии.

    Техника пиратов слабее чем техника империи и повстанцев. Лучше заказывать ее побольше.

    -Исправлена ошибка с начислением кредитов.
    -Отредактированы наземные карты, у пиратов теперь тоже есть турболазеры, щиты.
    -Добавлено поведение ИИ пиратам: пираты строят космические и наземные структуры, пользуются всеми юнитами.
    -Отредактированы мультиплеерные компании – были добавлены герои пиратов.
    -Пиратам были добавлены новые герои – Джабба Хатт и Хан Соло с Чубакой
    О Джаббе Хатте:
    -Для перемещения по галактике использует уникальный пиратский крейсер, со способностью перебрасывать всю энергию на щиты или на оружие.
    -В наземном сражении дает бонус в сражении, бонус добычи ресурсов. Всегда носит с собой мощный бластер.

    Republic at War

    This Clone Wars-era mod stands as the most popular example of its type across Steam and ModDB (and the most popular mod, period.). It is a total conversion that sets the action during the Clone Wars, replacing the Empire with the Galactic Republic and the Rebellion with the Confederacy. It’s heavily inspired by the films, but it also takes notes from the cartoon and expanded universe content as well. It looks pretty well made, and you can read an official change-log if you want to see how it’s been maintained and tweaked over the years.

    There are alternative Clone War-era mods as well, if it’s something you fancy exploring in more detail. There’s a newer Star Wars: Clone Wars mod on ModDB as well as this mod – The Clone Wars 4.0 on Steam.

    Battlestar Galactica: War of the Colonies

    And finally (though dozens of other mods deserve recognition) we have a Battlestar space-only mod that brings us fleet battles between the Colonials and Cylons.

    Command fleets of Battle/Basestars with tech and units from the original and 2004 shows. This includes (with the heroes setting on) the iconic Jupiter Class Battlestar – Galactica herself, and even the Mercury class Pegasus. Battlestar nerds rejoice, we haven’t been forgotten.

    What really intrigues me about this mod in particular is the combat redesign, that accurately aligns with how battles took place in BSG. Most ship weapons are broadside, and missiles are a major backbone of warfare. The unique part is the way battlestars utilize and shoot flak fields, thus eliminating enemy missiles and fighters caught. There’s also abilities that scramble the guidance of missiles before impact. It’s accuracy is satisfying and it’s execution is glorious to play. Any die-hard fan will absolutely adore War of the Colonies.

      Stargate – Empire at War: Pegasus Chronicles

      For the next few entries on the list, we’re going to leave George Lucas’s iconic creation behind: What better way to make a Star Wars game better than by making it not about Star Wars at all? Stargate is one of those IPs I wish had more multi-media tie-ins, especially in the gaming world, but alas, we’ll have to make do with this total conversion mod that sets the action within the iconic 90’s TV show.

      You can play as either the Human/Asgard alliance, the Goa’uld, and then the Wraith from the Atlantis spin-off show. The main focus so far has been on space combat, with the skeleton of ground combat on really being brought to the fore this year. To be honest, Stargate’s premise doesn’t quite lend itself to the kind of strategic concerns that Empire at War provides, but hey, we’ll take it. Available on both Steam and ModDB.

      Battlestar Galactica: War of the Colonies
