The Binding of Isaac: the best mods to try before Repentance

The Binding of Isaac

The Binding of Isaac

The Binding of Isaac: Vectorized

The Binding of Isaac: Vectorized – фанатская графическая переработка спрайтов, предметов и общего оформления игры. The Binding of Isaac

No More Breakfasting!

No More Breakfasting!

Da Rules: A Sandbox Menu

Da Rules: A Sandbox Menu фактически превращает The Binding of Isaac в редактор собственных подземелий.

Better Colored Stat Icons HUD

Better Character Menu

Encyclopedia – An In-Game Wiki

Dice Room Descriptions

External Item Descriptions

External Item Descriptions – один из наиболее полезных модов для The Binding of Isaac.

The Isaac of Isaac: Re-Isaac

The Isaac of Isaac: Re-Isaac – уморительный мод от создателя одноименного видео на YouTube.

FPS Mode

The Binding of Isaac: the best mods to try before Repentance

With The Binding of Isaac: Repentance almost complete, I thought that now would be a good time to look at some mods for The Binding of Isaac. These are some of the best mods you can get for the game, adding new ways to play, and in some cases acting as full-on expansions of their own. While not everything here is canon, it’s definitely a way to enjoy this game with a fresh new look and feel.

The Binding of Isaac: Antibirth

By its own admission, this is a fan-made expansion — it’s just unofficial. The mod is actually supposed to be an expansion for The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, the latest update for the base game. Don’t take that description lightly; this mod really does go all out in what it delivers. There are two new characters — each with their own unique play styles — to play as you explore the Basement and beyond. This alone adds a lot of depth to the game, but it’s the 90+ collectibles that will keep you searching for more and more unique combinations to use that will keep you playing. These are necessary in order to take down some of the 80+ brand new enemies, though the addition of around 20 new Trinkets also helps.

If none of that sounds impressive enough, then how about 16 new bosses to fight and 4,000 new rooms? I thought that would get your attention. To top it off, there are also new secrets, a fully enhanced soundtrack, and a hidden final chapter to discover and explore. With this mod, you may not even need Repentance.

Extremely Overpowered Start

This mod was built for those looking to mix things up in Afterbirth. What it does is provide all the items that are widely considered to be powerful (by community standards) in your starting room. No need to explore, as they’re just plonked there on the floor waiting for you to pick them up. They’ll also appear in the starting room of each new floor.

The idea is that you now have the most powerful items in the game to create different combinations to start with and test out in a full run of the game. It may not seem fun to some to have an overpowered build from the beginning, but for others this could be a chance to actually beat the game in every single level. If nothing else, it’ll help you focus on defeating enemies rather than sucking up items and deciding whether to do the next Devil Deal.

Super Insane Special Rooms

This is one of those The Binding of Isaac mods that you may not even notice. It changes up the Special rooms (the Item, Angel, and Devil rooms), adding in a collection of items for you to pick from. The idea is that you now don’t have to worry too much about the items you’ve collected. In every floor there will be at least one opportunity to enter this room and pick up something else, changing the active synergies you have enabled. It’s perfect if you want to test out lots of different items together, but not great if you want a fair run at the game.

Nuclear Apocalypse Mode

You may not even want to try this mod, unless you’re a glutton for punishment. Every single boss in the game is changed with this mod, and they adapt to how you play. This isn’t quite as clever as it sounds though. Depending on the choices you’ve made, such as the Devil Deals you make and the items you pick up, you may end up giving a boss more health or damage. It adds a whole new dynamic to playing The Binding of Isaac, one that I think is too stressful for me to pull off. You might enjoy it, though.

The Agony of Isaac

Poor Isaac cannot catch a break. This mod is pretty simple, and has very little description to add to the mystery around it. There are more than 100 new enemies, and over 2,000 new rooms. This is a nice alternative to some of the other Binding of Isaac mods on this list that may be a little too intense. It’s definitely not vanilla, but maybe somewhere around banana — safe yet slightly adventurous.

The Savior Mod Pack

Here we have a mod that is designed to be a vanilla-style expansion to The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth. It adds a load of new rooms to explore and master, as well as a couple of new enemies. The difference is that these aren’t completely insane monsters that don’t fit within the lore. They’re meant to be part of the game’s world, and fit thematically with everything else you come up against. It also adds a new layer of challenge, but it’s not obvious about it. As you unlock new rooms and levels, you’ll notice the subtle differences that have been made to increase the difficulty, or make something else slightly easier. It’s devilishly vague, but also incredibly intriguing.

Varying Special Rooms Mod

This is another flavor of ‘small expansion mod’ to try out. It adds quite a lot to the game, including 65 new item rooms, 55 new curse rooms, and 33 new challenge rooms. There’s a lot on offer here, and some of it has been built to subvert your expectations. I’d say this is a nice mod to start out with if you’re unsure about some of the larger ones. It’s not compatible with other mods anyway, so you’d only be able to use it by itself. It will keep you on your toes though, even if you’re an experienced player.

Infinite Item Charge

This mod is more just for fun than anything else. I doubt any purists out there would go near it. It simply gives every active item an infinite charge, and it’s about as insane as it sounds. You no longer need to clear rooms in order to charge anything up. You can just pick up an item and go nuts with it. Honestly, this mod is absolute carnage. When you’ve had a tough couple of runs though, sometimes this is what you need to get you back on your feet and feeling good about yourself again.

Those are my top choices when it comes to The Binding of Isaac mods. I hope there’s something that looks appealing to you in there somewhere.

6 Essential Mods for Improving Your Binding of Isaac: Repentance Experience

The Binding of Isaac: Repentance update re-enables modding for the popular roguelike, letting players tweak their game however they want yet again.

The Binding of Isaac: Repentance has been hailed as a fantastic expansion to the popular rogue-like (unlike other recently-released expansions). It changes up the experience significantly with item additions, balancing changes, new endings and even a whole host of new characters to unlock. However, fans were disappointed when Repentance was initially released with the game’s modding capabilities disabled. This was largely a decision to help smooth out the developers’ bug-finding process, but it took until May 15th and Update v4.04 to reinstate compatibility with Steam’s Workshop.

The Binding of Isaac‘s modding community is a strong one, and already Repentance-specific mods are coming in fast. While some of them aim to ‘fix’ some of the balance decisions that players feel were detrimental, many mods add new content and great quality of life changes. Players need to note that the game encourages new players to play without mods first for a ‘vanilla’ experience. It does this by disabling achievements until the player has defeated ‘Mom’ (the first final boss) without mods. After that milestone, players are free to mod to their hearts’ delights. With that said, let’s look at some of the better mods to consider downloading.

Old Wardrobe

This mod adds a new interactable item to the game which allows the player to change their appearance. The Old Wardrobe appears in the first room of every floor and is used to customize the costume he’s wearing. In The Binding of Isaac, almost every item affects the player character’s appearance, with some having very significant changes — for example, the popular item ‘Brimstone’ makes Isaac’s skin black and gives him horns.

With the Old Wardrobe, players can equip or de-equip specific items in their loadout to look exactly how they want. Additionally, up to 32 costumed can be saved in the wardrobe for use in future runs, which can be neat for players who come across a particularly cool-looking costume. The author, Sinsthar, has gone to great lengths to make this mod convenient, too, as it stops the in-game timer when in use and even works with multiplayer.

Better Champion Bosses

This mod addresses a criticism that players may not even realize they had before encountering it. Most bosses in the game have a chance of being a ‘Champion’ variant. This usually means a slight changeup in attacks or strategies, increased damage and always comes with a particular tint applied to their sprite. For example, Monstro — an early boss — can come in ‘gray champion’ variety, making him gray and focusing on projectile attacks.

Enter Better Champion Bosses, which does away with the standard tints and gives champion bosses exciting new appearances. While it may take long-time players a little while to get used to the new sprites, they will undoubtedly appreciate the new visual variety introduced into the game.

Visible Tinted Rocks

Tinted rocks are an important part of The Binding of Isaac‘s ecosystem. They exist as tempting parts of the environment that the player can blow up for useful rewards, such as soul hearts or the beloved ‘Small Rock’ item. One issue that players have, however, is that they can often be hard to notice. While this may be an intentional design choice, it doesn’t stop the negative feeling that occurs when walking straight past a resource that could save a particular run. This also impacts players with sight problems or color blindness, who may be impaired in the game through no fault of their own.

With Visible Tinted Rocks, this problem is largely something of the past. It makes these valuable rocks a lot more visible and noticeable by making them stand out more against the other rocks of the current floor. The author, Tdlc, is kind enough to have three different versions of the mod that change the rocks’ appearance to varying degrees — useful for those who don’t want the game to feel too easy.

Upgraded Pocket Actives On All Characters

With Repentance came 14 whole new characters to unlock. These are known by the community as ‘Tainted’ characters, as they are rather gimmicky versions of the characters that already existed. For example, while Judas begins the game with ‘Book of Belial’ to increase his damage output temporarily, Tainted Judas begins with ‘Dark Arts,’ which is an item that allows him to zoom across rooms freezing and damaging enemies.

The items that Tainted Characters start with are permanent and occupy a slot in the screen’s bottom-left corner. They cannot be dropped and are responsible for making these characters feel unique. What Upgraded Pocket Actives on All Characters does is extend this feature to all regular characters who don’t enjoy this benefit. This makes every character that begins with an activated item feel more unique, not just ‘Isaac with different stats.’

Repentance Plus

You want MORE Binding of Isaac: Repentance? That’s where the Repentenace Plus mod comes in. Available via Steam Workshop, this fan mod expands the already massive selection of content, letting you lose yourself in the world of Binding of Isaac for just a little bit longer.

Repentance Plus is still growing, but for now, it adds new items, trinkets, cards and pills, as well as a new chest. Most importantly, none of the content is locked behind achievements or narratives. All you’ve got to do is install it and you’re ready to go.

External Item Descriptions

The most subscribed item on the Workshop, External Item Descriptions is a fantastic utility mod. When used, it displays a small description of any item or pickup that the player is near, letting them know what it does. In a game with over 700 distinct items, it can be very difficult to remember what each one does, and this mod alleviates some of the stress that players can feel when making choices.

While to some this mod may feel a bit like a cheat, to others, it’s simply a way to avoid alt-tabbing to a website that tells them what the item does anyway.

The Best Binding of Isaac Repentance Seeds

As the most recent DLC, it was harder to find a lot of the best Binding of Isaac seeds for Repentance, but there are still plenty to be getting on with. As of time of writing, Repentance is only available for the PC, so all the Repentance seeds below are only for PC.

N62G K7JW

Mode: Normal

Items: Ankh, Bible, Tech X, Mutant Spider, Guppy’s Collar, Sausage, Faded Polaroid, Flat File.

Notes: Run works well with Azazel. Find the secret rooms to make the most of the run (the Bible is in a secret room on Depths II).

D4E4 YK0G

Mode: Normal

Items: Rocket in a Jar, Goat Head, Dead Cat, Soy Milk, Blood Clot.

Notes: Very fun Isaac seed that leads to some interesting synergies, particularly if playing as Azazel. It’s the run that keeps on giving and continues to get stronger the farther you get.

QN1W 1DDF

Mode: Normal

Items: Inner Eye, Almond Milk, Brimstone, Pentagram, Brain Worm.

Notes: Very OP run that will leave you with triple Brimstone and homing shots to boot.

8Z1E 0TAK

Mode: Normal

Items: Mutant Spider, Proptosis, Brimstone.

Notes: Brimstone is on the 4th floor and the Brimstone is on the 4th floor’s Devil Room.

NLZE 1YE8

Mode: Normal

Items: Inner Eye, Mutant Spider, Squeezy

Notes: This is a good seed if you like multiple tears in one shot. It gets good fast and you can tailor it how you like after getting these strong items early on.

The Best Afterbirth+ Seeds

PC Afterbirth+ Seeds

Here are the best Binding of Isaac seeds for the PC in the Afterbirth+ DLC.

H9FG 81HH

Mode: Normal

Items: Inner Eye, Mutant Spider, 20/20, Tammy’s Head, Multidimensional Baby

Notes: Fun with any character but Tammy’s Head makes Azazel the character of choice in this one.

HCER LV8R

Mode: Normal

Items: Brimstone, Mutant Spider, Magic Mushroom, Lost Contact

Notes: Very powerful seed with great projectile protection from shielded tears. Brimstone is in the second floor devil room.

0E81 79LB

Mode: Hard

Items: Ludovico Technique, Small Rock, Cricket’s Head, Spider Bite

Notes: A great seed for Azazel as you get Ludo on the first floor. Small Rock is found by bombing the marked rock on the first floor, and Cricket’s Head is in a stone chest on the second floor.

Nintendo Switch Afterbirth+ Seeds

Here are a few of the best Binding of Isaac Seeds for Switch:

MZ4L 3QMG

Mode: Normal

Items: Mutant Spider, Proptosis, Brimstone, 20/20, The Mulligan, Jacob’s Ladder, Spirit of the Night

Notes: One of the most OP seeds I’ve tried. Pyromaniac also turns up at some point which helps the low number of health upgrades.

0JH0 CR3E

Mode: Normal

Items: Godhead, Book of Sins, Capricorn, Judas’s Shadow, Athame, Guppy’s Collar, Growth Hormones.

Notes: Best played as Eden in order to get Godhead as one of the starting items. Would still be a strong seed with other characters, though.

PS4 Afterbirth+ Seeds

Here are some fun BOI Afterbirth+ seeds for the PS4.

H3TY STBK

Mode: Normal

Items: Guppy’s Paw, Guppy’s Head, Guppy’s Head, Hive Mind, BFF

Notes: If you like Guppy, you’re in for a treat with this seed. Needs to be played as Isaac in order to get Guppy on the first floor. In the curse room, open the 3 Red Chests, take Guppy’s Paw and then touch Guppy’s Head and replace it again for the D6. Re-roll the head into Guppy’s Collar and let the fun commence!

D6XA WL2H

Mode: Normal

Items: Guppy, Wafer, Inner Eye, Epic Fetus

Notes: Make sure to visit the Dice Room on the first floor!
